Light north winds headed to the surf. Made a stop and only caught skipjacks, and baby cravel..no keeper fish. Headed down the surf and spotted several big blow ups off the beach. We crashed into the nervous water and in less than a minute the spinning reel was screaming. Everyone on the boat and caught and released a jack. We were spooled once. Didn’t have much faith in the surf…headed to west bay. Drifted for 1 1/2 and managed 7 keeper trout and tons of throwbacks.
August 22-24 Axis Hunt
August 31st, 2009

Headed to Junction to hunt with my friend Derrick Ard. The hunt started off tough, even though the first hunt we spotted one of the biggest axis we’ve seen on this ranch. By the end of the 3rd hunt – no shot. Derrick picked me up on the Polaris and on the way in I shot a 31″ axis. Plenty of meat in the cooler. The next morning I shot another great deer – 28″. Overall excellent hunt. Thanks Derrick for the hookup.

Vince Lissey and crew came down to wade East Bay – looking for a big girl. Managed a few bites throughout the day. Several blow ups on pink skitterwalk, definately bigger fish, but the biggest fish of the day was caught on black TTF morning glory. Just so happen it was me that bumped into the 27 3/4″ trout.

Left the Harbor at 1:00 Sunday with Russell and Brandy…headed to a floater in about 3500 foot of water. Stopped on the way and caught a few good grouper. Brandy catching the biggest weighing over 40 lbs. Decided there was too much weather between us and the floater, so we tied up to Falcon for the night. First thing in the morning, trolled big lures for breakfast. We weren’t able to raise a bill fish, but Brandy landed a her personal best 30 plus # dolphin. Ended up with scamp, grouper, tuna, and snapper. We had a great trip.

Bob Matta, Spider Man and Alex came down to drift. Fished all morning in East Bay and it was slow, slow. I was thinking about going in on a half day. Spider Man wasn’t having it. Headed back to the reef around 12:00, where I’ve been catching my big trout. We made a drift and caught 3 trout over 25″, along with several keepers. Made two more drifts and caught several more 24″-28″ trout. We did not get our limits, but the quality fish was exceptional. I’ll take days like this anytime.
